![]() This event has been immortalized in Walking Dead history as something that surprised the audience who watched that episode. Rick saved Hershel in the bar during season 2, which began an untested friendship, and Hershel brought Rick back to earth after Lori died, which strengthened their relationship. Ricks face when the sword goes through Hershel’s neck is one of anger and remorse, as he just lost someone he had the pleasure of calling a friend. Hershel was the voice of reason in the group, and it is easy to see that Rick respected him a lot and regarded him as a family member. It is evident that Rick does not want to fight The Governor, as when they’re all staring each other down at the gates of the prison, Rick still has a little hope left and tries to persuade Phillip to let his hostages go and join them, but he refuses and kills Hershel. It takes him a while finally snap out of it, and thanks to Hershel it happened quickly. He sees the ghost of Lori in the prison and even hears her through the phone, along with others who had died. Something in Rick died that day, because we see him lose it over the course of the rest of the season. Now, I know that this scene has inspired countless memes, but you gotta admit. Unfortunately, Rick wasn’t there for the birth or Lori’s death due to an attack on the prison. Throughout the first half of season 3, viewers saw that Lori was close to giving birth to Judith at that time, which made Rick especially protective of her. He yells “I killed my best friend for you people for Christ’s sake!” He’s still very upset over the recent death but at the same time, you can feel that Rick is changing. In that field, during Shane’s death it’s clear that Rick didn’t want to kill him as he said “this was you, not me.” In the season finale after the farm is destroyed, he lashed out at everyone because they were all upset that he lied to them. ![]() Over the course of season 2 we see their friendship deteriorate to the point where Shane believes the only way to get his true happiness is to kill Rick. Shane probably spent a lot of time with his family and such things. Before the apocalypse we all know Shane and Rick were pretty tight. I’m going to go through the events that I believe resulted in the death of “Officer Friendly”. Personally, I think the transformation happened gradually, over a series of events that changed him, and not all at once. I’ve been thinking about it since Morales mentioned it last Sunday.
